Report | ESBQ auditions: a gateway to the world of ballet – La Presse

La Presse followed the auditions at the École supérieure de ballet du Québec and offers a three-part series on this milestone in the young dancers' careers.

From the excitement of the youngest students to the mastery of the more advanced ones, the series follows the auditions from the Junior cycle to the Superior cycle. We discover how an audition day unfolds, what criteria guide the teaching team's evaluation, and how the ESBQ ensures a respectful, structured, and encouraging environment.

Artistic director Anik Bissonnette also shares her perspective on the evolution of the format and the importance of supporting each contestant beyond their performance on the day.

What you'll love about this feature:

  • Behind the scenes: what happens during an audition day, from the studio to the evaluation;
  • The perspective of the artistic and teaching team on what they are looking for (and why);
  • The importance placed on supporting candidates, beyond their performance on the day.

1. The excitement of youth
2. Anxiety in adolescence
3. The mastery acquired
