L’École supérieure Pays Tribute to Photographer Michael Slobodian

L’École supérieure de ballet du Québec wishes to pay tribute to the memory of photographer Michael Slobodian, whose lens captured countless moments in the artistic life of l’École supérieure and throughout the journeys of its students. Performances, portraits, rehearsals: over the years, his camera captured the gestures, faces, and milestones that have shaped several generations of dancers.

A Vision That Understood Movement

“Photographing dance requires a true vision, and Michael had a deep understanding of movement. He knew how to capture the instant when a movement became an emotion. A perfectionist, he was always searching for the right gesture, expression, and moment. This precision gave his images a particular strength. His talent was recognized far beyond Montreal, and he was highly sought after in the dance world internationally,” says Anik Bissonnette, Artistic Director of l’École supérieure de ballet du Québec.

A Presence Among Young Artists

At l’École supérieure, Michael Slobodian’s contribution went beyond photography. During photo sessions for graduating students, he shared his expertise in working in front of the camera. Michael helped students understand the lens, present movement effectively for the image, and develop a confidence in front of the camera that could serve them throughout their careers.

Rediscovering His Vision of Dance

In addition to his work with l’École supérieure, Michael Slobodian enjoyed a prolific career beginning in the 1980s, working in fashion, portraiture, and dance photography, and collaborating with numerous performers, choreographers, and companies in Canada and internationally.

Today, Michael Slobodian’s photographs represent a precious record of our dance heritage. Through a selection of his photographs, the Bibliothèque de la danse Vincent-Warren invites us to rediscover his vision of dance and of those who bring it to life.
